The predecessor to Cologne's new World Cup stadium was the Müngersdorfer Stadion, the only fully covered stadium in Germany when it was built in 1975. The ground is home to FC Köln of the Bundesliga.
Cologne's new stadium, constructed on the site of the old Müngersdorfer stadium, staged its inaugural match on 31 March 2004 with a friendly between Germany and Belgium. The ground continued to operate during the two-year construction phase as the four stands were demolished and replaced in turn. Total costs for the stadium reconstruction are estimated at €110 million Euros.
The stadium will have a capacity of 46,000 for the World Cup (normally 51,000). Renovation of the stadium was completed in 2004. It is usually known as the RheinEnergieStadion, but during the World Cup the stadium will be known as FIFA World Cup Stadium, Cologne.
There will be large screens in the middle of town although the exact locations are still to be decided. They will most probably be located between the Cathedral and the Heumarkt where there are large open spaces. All games will be shown.
There are many ways of getting to Cologne’s stadium. Admission tickets to the games are simultaneously valid as travel tickets throughout the network of the KVB and VRS in and around Cologne. These will be valid four hours before kick-off until the end of service at 3 a.m.
From the Airport Köln/Bonn, it is best to take the S-Bahn (overhead railway) S-13 to the stop Köln-Messe/Deutz. There you can change to the urban railway line 1 of the Cologne Transport Company (KVB) and travel straight through to the stop FIFA World Cup Stadium.
From the Düsseldorf and Frankfurt airports, it is best to travel to the stop Köln-Messe/Deutz.
