Frankfurt - Commerzbank Arena

Frankfurt

Frankfurt palmengarten

Germany's main financial centre, and site of Europe's 2nd busiest airport, Frankfurt is a dynamic European metropolis, a global village, a melting pot of cultures, languages and lifestyles. The imposing skyline is what newcomers remember most, but behind those glass facades the atmosphere is surprisingly relaxed. It will also be one of the most spectacular venues for open air viewing as a giant screen will be located on the Main river, against the backdrop of Frankfurt's skyscrapers.

Commerzbank Arena

Commerzbank Arena, Frankfurt

The Frankfurt venue is Eintracht Frankfurt's ground the Waldstadion. This has been extensively renovated since 2002 for World Cup 2006 at a cost of €126 million euros, and was reopened earlier this year. The new Waldstadion is being built on the same site as its previous incarnation, which was erected in the 1920s and renovated for the 1974 FIFA World Cup and again for the 1988 European Championships.

It is now called the Commerzbank Arena and is a state of the art, multipurpose arena with a 50,000 all seater capacity. It was the venue for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 Final between Brazil and Argentina in June 2005 and produced a fantastic atmosphere, as it is a true football stadium with no running track. The stadium features a sliding roof, which when not in use cleverly fits inside the huge video cube that hangs over the centre of the pitch.

World Cup Fan Fest in Frankfurt

Frankfurt will be a good place for ticketless fans to watch the games as the city has proposed an attractive Fan Fest area around the river. This will be called the "MainArena". From the opening match on 9th June to the final on 9th July, the Main river embankments will be transformed into a "bustling and vivacious open-air arena". Flanked by the Frankfurt skyline on the city side and the attractive museum row on the southern Sachsenhausen, a gigantic movie screen will float on the River Main, allowing fans to follow the match broadcasts live and free of charge from either side of the river.

Standing-room terraces will be set up just above the embankment near the city streets, while grandstands along the quay wall and the embankment itself will provide seating closer to the rivers edge. The riverside lawns will offer even more spectator space on the city side. All told, the MainArena will be boasting a capacity of over 15.000.

Travelling to Frankfurt

Frankfurt Airport is a major transport hub with a many daily flights to and from European destinations. From outside Europe there are direct flights to Korea, India, China, Japan and North America. The airport is located 12km (8 miles) southwest of the city center. Frankfurt airport has two railway stations, linked by a shuttle bus service. One station is for local traffic, the other for long-distance trains.

Frankfurt Hahn airport is the airport of choice for budget travellers. It's about 1hr 30mins by coach from Frankfurt and has limited facilities.

Travel to the stadium from the city would be by public transport, mainly train. Frankfurt's central railway station (Hauptbahnhof) is near the Frankfurt Fair (Messe) and walking distance to the Central Business District.
