After an embarrassing exit at the group stage in 2002, France will be determined to avoid repeating that performance, or lack of, again at World Cup 2006. Although topping their European qualifying group, France struggled to find their form, managing only five wins and five draws. On paper though, France would still appear favourites in Group G, and should progress to the second round as long as they manage not to slip up again.

France's neighbours Switzerland will by now be familiar opponents, having both been in the same European qualifying group. Lack of experience at this level may be Switzerland's weakness, but they pushed France all the way in qualification, with both matches between them resulting in hard-fought draws.

Korea Republic will be spurred on by their semi-final appearance at World Cup 2002 on home soil, and will be keen to repeat that performance in Germany. A solid and pacy team, Korea Republic could do well if they can adapt to European conditions.

Making their first World Cup finals appearance, Togo are an unknown quantity in world football with only an outside chance of progressing to the second round. They can be inspired by the achievement of Senegal who were in a similar situation four years ago, yet managed to make the second round after beating France in the group stage.
