Located in North Germany, Hanover is a trading centre with long links to the UK. Hanover was built up on the back of trade and the brewing industry, both of which are still major sectors in the local economy. The city was heavily bombed in World War II and little of the Altstadt (Old Town) remains intact. The city takes great pride in hosting two important trade fairs: CeBit, the largest office information and telecommunications trade show held annually in March; and the Hanover Fair, an industrial fair held in April. Hanover also hosted Expo 2000 and the exhibition site at Messegelände still has many of the original exhibits in situ.
Five World Cup games will be staged at Hanover's AWD Arena - four group matches, and one 2nd Round match. The match schedule is as follows:

After two years of major construction work Hanover stadium is ready for the World Cup. The €63 million euro modernisation programme has brought the city's former Niedersachsenstadion up to the demanding standards required of a FIFA World Cup ground. The football-only stadium - since reconstruction now called the AWD Arena - made its debut as an international venue on 16 June 2005 when Mexico and Japan met in the first round of the FIFA Confederations Cup. The stadium, and it's predecessor, have been the home ground of the Bundesliga's Hannover 96 since 1959.
The new stadium can hold 49,000 for domestic fixtures, including 7,000 standing places. For the FIFA Confederations Cup there were 44,652 seats, all under cover, and the same will be available for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
From 9th June till 9th July Hanover will lay on free live broadcasts of all the World Cup action on the big screen and a colourful supporting programme every match day at Waterlooplatz near the city's World Cup Stadium for up to 20,000 fans. Admission to the Fan Fest will be free.
Hanover International Airport (HAJ), also called Langenhagen Airport with reference to the nearby town, is situated 11km north of downtown Hanover, and is the eighth largest airport in Germany.
From the airport, take the S-Bahn 5, get off at Hannover Hauptbahnhof and leave the station at the city end. The stadium is an easy walk via Bahnhofstraße , Kröpcke, Karmarschstraße and Culemannstraße, or you can take subway lines 3 and 7. Get off at the third station (Waterloo) and follow the signs to the FIFA WM-Stadion Hannover. Tickets to the matches are also valid for travel on all train, tram and bus routes with the GVH area.
As most roads in the vicinity of the stadium will be closed from 2pm on match days, the easiest way to travel to the stadium is to take the S-Bahn. See directions above.
