Located in the federal state of Bavaria, Nuremberg was an early centre of humanism, science, printing, and mechanical invention. For many people Nuremberg is still associated with its traditional production of gingerbread (Lebkuchen), sausages and handmade toys, though today Nuremberg is in the process of transforming itself from an industrial city to a technology-based service centre. The city's name will always be associated with the famous trials of leading Nazis which took place after the Second World War, but the city has now recovered its past glories and Nuremberg is a lively place to visit, especially in summer, when the magnificent Altstadt (Old Town) is buzzing with outdoor music, street theatre, and nightlife.
Five World Cup games will be staged at Nuremberg's Franken-Stadion - four group matches, and one 2nd Round match. The match schedule is as follows:

The Frankenstadion was inaugurated in 1928 in Nuremberg as home stadium to Bundesliga club FC Nuremberg. Previously known as the Urban Stadium, it received its current name in 1991. Renovation for World Cup 2006 began in 2002 and cost €56.2 million euros. The stadium has had its capacity increased to 48,000 by extending the southwest and northwest grandstand, and the playing field was lowered by 1.30 meters in order to provide all seats a unrestricted view of the pitch. The stadium also features track and field facilities that meet international regulations, an eco-friendly rainwater collection system that feeds the sprinkler system, a heated pitch, and a new floodlight system. Two 60 square meter video walls provide video for the fans, and there is also a full power back up system, powered by diesel generators.
Facilities available at the stadium include two changing rooms for players, changing rooms for coaches & referees, and physician and treatment rooms. Press facilities include a 300 square meter press area, an area for press conferences, and three TV studios. A three-storey, 1200 square meters VIP building can accomodate 800 guests, and there are 15,000 parking spaces with 205 for VIPs, making the Franken-Stadion a truly modern stadium with a unique atmosphere and superb facilities.
Official public viewing in Nuremberg will happen at the Volksfestplatz, which is in sight of the stadium. About 600,000 people are expected to come to the Fan Fest in Nuremberg.
Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is 5 km north of the city center. From the airport it takes around 20 mins by car, or 12 mins by U-Bahn (U2) to Hauptbahnhof, then change to the S-Bahn to travel to the stadium. Fans also have the option of flying into Frankfurt or Munich, then onwards by train or bus to Nuremberg (about two hours).
The stadium is close to the city centre, 4 stops on the S-Bahn (8 minutes) from the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof). On the U-Bahn take line U1 for Messezentrum, on the S-Bahn take line S2 for Frankenstadion. To get there by bus simply take the 65 line.
During the tournament regional and long-distance trains of Die Bahn will stop specially at Frankenstadion station.
