Stuttgart is one of three distinctively 'southern' locations for the World Cup. The city center is situated in a lush valley, ringed with vineyards and forests, close to the River Neckar, with a population of around 590,000. The area is known for its high-tech industry; some of its most prominent companies include Daimler-Chrysler, Porsche, Bosch, Celesio, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, all of whom located their world or German headquarters here. The neighbouring Black Forest and Bodensee lakes offer ample opportunities for tourism, ensuring that Stuttgart will be one of the most visited cities during the World Cup.
Six World Cup games will be staged at Stuttgart's Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion - four group matches, one 2nd Round match, and the 3rd/4th place play-off match. The match schedule is as follows:

The Stuttgart venue is VfB Stuttgart's ground, the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, formerly known as the Neckarstadion. The stadium lies at the heart of the Cannstatter Wasen sports complex on the north-east side of Stuttgart. The stadium's modernisation programme for the 2006 World Cup began in January 2004 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2005 at a cost of €51.5 million euros.
A highlight of the new ground is the textile roof covering, with a supporting structure following the principle of a horizontal hub and spoke system. The roof is created from PVC coated polyester fibre and covers the stands with some 34,000 square metres of material at heights varying between 18 and 35 metres. A new seating tier will be created opposite the main stand, electronic access controls installed and two new video screens mounted, at 115 square metres viewable area and 11 tonnes apiece, the biggest of their kind in Europe. Once the expansion is complete Stuttgart will have the fourth largest World Cup stadium in Germany with a maximum capacity of 54,267 spectators.
Fan Fest in Stuttgart will be held in the Schlossplatz in the heart of the city which will be turned into a large outdoor viewing area for up to 80,000 spectators. Four enormous screens will show all games and the area will be open from 1100 to 0100 daily during the World Cup. Several stages will feature performing artists from the countries scheduled to play on each day, and food and alcohol will be available.
Stuttgart Airport (STR) is an international airport situated in the south side of the Stuttgart metropolitan area, with portions lying in three cities. From Stuttgart Airport trains into the city leave every 20 minutes from below the arrival area of Terminal 1 and cost €3. Travel time is 27 minutes for the 14km journey. A taxi will cost around €30.
By train, Munich is a 2-3 hour trip and trains run frequently. Frankfurt takes a bit less than two hours. Stuttgart also has buses, streetcars, and a subway system. A 3-day travel pass can be obtained for about €14, depending on the number of travel zones. It is valid on all forms of public transportation and is available only to temporary residents staying in a local hotel or guesthouse. The day pass (Tageskarte) costs around €5.
To get to the stadium take S-Bahn Line S1 or tram line U11 to Neckarstadion.
